Conference "Comics Worlds and the World of Comics: Scholarship on a Global Scale" underway

Nele — Sat, 12/19/2009 - 02:00

I'm having a great time in Kyoto at "Comics Worlds and the World of Comics: Scholarship on a Global Scale", the first international conference on manga/comics research at the Kyoto International Manga Museum, organised by Kyoto Seika University. Met a ton of interesting people with very interesting ideas that I'll write about in length later. Wireless access is a bit problematic so I can't post/tweet as much as I'd like right now, but those who'd like to follow the tweets, go here.

Since I already gave my own presentation on the influence of copyright on the place of dojinshi/fan comics in comics research (click to go to the prezi, it's both Japanese and English), the pressure is off a bit and I can finally give proper attention to what everyone else is saying. Yesterday was the keynote and the workshop for young researchers. Very much looking forward to today's session on shojo manga and gender with the admirable Trina Robbins (who opened an exhibition on American women's comics at the MM on the 17th), and fellow Belgian Pascal Lefèvre's talk.

Must dash to the museum now for the start of day two.

Olga! Yes, please mail me -I realized a couple of days ago that I don't seem to have your mail address. I just got home a few hours ago and am now doing battle with a mile-long to-do list and overflowing inbox while being sat on by cats. Did you send anything to Trina Robbins yet, by any chance? I want to try and make a list for her in the next couple of days. Thanks again for everything in Kyoto. I'll let you know as soon as I have anything definitive to say about that next visit to Japan.
